Sex for Roles in Nollywood: Response by Victor Okpala on rape allegations

Finally, there is a response from Victor Okpala the on rape accusations made against him.

The news last week was of Dope 7 Media’s CEO and Nollywood filmmaker Victor Okpala, on rape accusations and allegedly demanding sex for roles in his Nollywood productions. Several young actresses dropped confessions on how Victor Okpala had demanded a ‘sacrifice’ of their bodies in order to have active roles in his current and forthcoming movie productions.

 

Victor Okpala on rape might sue Lala AkindojuThe heaviest of these allegations were made by Actress Lala Akindoju, on 5th of June 2020. She obtained and released an audio-video confession of an actress accusing Victor Okpala of raping her on one of his movie set. In tears and recoil, the young actress relived how she was called into the director’s private room and when she turned down his advances, he proceeded to lock the doors and rape her.

Victor Okpala through his lawyer Aghogho Akpojotor, has sent a petition to the Nigerian Police force, boldly asking for an investigation into the allegations laid against him.

In the petition, he asks that Lala Akindoju provides a face to the voice of the young lady that accused him of rape in order to substantiate the allegations. If she doesn’t within a stipulated time, he would then be suing for defamation of character under Section 24 of Cyber Crime (Prohibition, Prevention) Act 2015.

In the letter signed by Barrister Aghogho Akpotojor, and dated 8th of June, Okpala demands that the matter is taken to court. It reads;

“It is, therefore, our humble prater threat the one means of clearing the image and restoring the reputation of our client which we hereby demand is for the Nigerian Police force to launch a full-scale independent investigation into the criminal allegations levelled against our client.

In this regard, our client is willing to surrender himself to the police and fully cooperate, work hand in hand with the police to ensure that this harmful untruth/malicious falsehood is seen as what it truly is.”

“Suggestively, in the most likely that Lala Akindoju is not able to physically produce the name and face behind the defamatory publication, and make available the needed body of evidence to substantiate her spurious claims, our client shall be demanding that Lala Akindoju / and her faceless alleged rape victim, be charged before the court of law as provided by our criminal justice law especially as captured by Section 24 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act 2015. ”In the light of the aforesaid, we implore you to accordingly use your good office to investigate on the complaints and this matter is accordingly charged to court in the interest of justice, equity and good conscience, as the person, marriage, reputation and good standing of our client is been maligned.”

The Victor Okpala rape controversy caused quite a stir in the Nollywood Industry. Raising more discussions on the #SexForRoles trend. Lala Akindoju has however refused to make public statements though her lawyer says they are in talks with Victor Okpala’s lawyer.
